Saw your message on GenForum.
None of the Helen FAIRBAIRNs I have in my database match exactly, but I do
have some details on a James AIKMAN of the right age in a neighbouring
On 16 Jun 1810, "before the congregation by Rev Mr Balfour" a James AIKMAN
was baptised. Son of Benjamin AIKMAN and Isabel SHIEL (my interest in the
entry). He was born Bowden 10 May 1810.

May not be of any interest whatsoever, but just in case it helps...

I take it that your Helen is the Hellen AIKMAN widow, 64, b Mellerstain at
Victoria St, Galashiels, Selkirk in the 1881 census?
I would assume that the other Helen AIKMAN in 1881 in Bowden is the sister
of the James above.

and that possibly a dtr Catharine b. Melrose 1856 married a Thomas GRAHAM
and was living in Gala in 1881?

If you ever find out more about your Helen F, I'd love to hear more as
FAIRBAIRN is one of my names and I've quite a bit of data connected up. My
particular ones are from Archibald F and Alison CROSSER, Swinton and
Simprin, their son Walter c 1784, mar Agnes ROBERTSON/ROBISON/ROBESON in
Morebattle 1806. Several descendants keep popping out of the woodwork as it
appears they were rather church shy.
