Hi Robynne,

If your Thomas married in 1855 in Scotland then his marriage cert will be on a film you can get via a Mormons Family History Centre for about $4NZ, read at your leisure and request a photocopy of the entry which should tell you heaps of information about Thomas and Elizabeth. 1855 was a good year for Scottish certificates.
Alternatively you can log into the Scots Origins site, pay more money and have a full copy in your little hot hand relatively quickly.
