John Walters, age 70 on the 24th of March next, states that he was born 24
March 1763 and lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina until he was about 30
years of age.Then moved to East Tennessee in Carter County on Roan's Creek
and lived there about 5 years then moved to Knox County, Kentucky and then
to Wayne County where I now live. {listed on 1820 Census of Wayne).
That in his 16th year, "I think in 1779 or 1780, I went as a substitute and
private for James Shepherd under Capt. Samuel Johnson, one tour of 3 months
upon a craft.Our Colonel was Samuel Isaacs of Wilkes County, North
Carolina.We marched through Wilkes, Chatham and Randolph Counties on Deep
River.We took 4 and 20 Tories and sent them to Salisbury jail.Marched
and counter marched against the British and Tories until the expiration of
our tour.Was discharged in writing at the Morovian town but have lost my
discharge, not thinking it can be of any service.
"About 18 months after my first tour, I think in September I again
volunteered for 3 months as a private against the Cherokee Indians under
Capt John Beverly at Wilke Court House and I think under Col. Benjamin
Harris.We had three regiments all under General Charles McDowell.We
marched to the Indian towns, burnt and destroyed several towns and their
corn crops.Killed a number of Indians and took a number of prisoners.I
lost my horse with a number of others.Thought they were stolen by the
Indians.We marched to what is now known as Buncombe County, North Carolina
and were discharged on the banks of the French River.Our Colonels were
Miller, Joseph McDowell, a brother to General Charles McDowell and Col.
Harris.The regiments all rendezvoused at Pleasant Garden and remained
there 2 or 3 days preparing to march.I lost my discharge to this tour
having served 6 months for which I claim compensation."
