Laura and Linda,
It's a long story, but just tonight I made a possible breakthrough on my 2nd gt-grandfather Alexander H. CORBITT who was born about 1829 in Buffalo, NY or perhaps Canada and killed in Mariposa Co., CA in 1854. A California newspaper extract about his death said Alexander left parents in St. Catharines, Canada.
The breakthrough was learning his mother was likely a FALCONBRIDGE. A snippet on Google Books from "Death Notices from the Christian Guardian, 1851-1860" by Donald A. McKenzie said:
"CORBITT, Alexander H., grandson of Mr. Falconbridge, postmaster at Drummondville, was shot dead, the 11 inst., in his home on the Stockton and Mariposa Road., California. - May 24, 1854, p. 129, N.T., St. Catherines Post"
I found a Samuel FALCONBRIDGE who was postmaster there from 1831-6 with children Blair, Kate, and Josie born in 1847, 1850, and 1853, respectively. Kate and Josies are too young -- can either of you help me identify the mother of Alexander CORBITT born in 1829?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Kay (Offutt) Schmidt
