"Fancher at 1857 Moutain Massacre"
From an article in the Arizona Republic Feb. 26 2002
A quick summmary- "1872" tablet may hold massacre truth or hoax.a lead tablet was found by the National Park service last month {22 Jan. 2002} The tablet was written by the only man executed{John D Lee} for the 1857 moutain meadows massacre in which 120 men ,women and children were killed by mormons and paiute indians . The tablet connects Brigham Young to J.D.Lee. it says President Young ordered the killings to J.D. Lee!,it mentions Capt. Alexander Fancher, leader of the ill-fated wagon train! .signed by Lee 11 Jan. 1872 . The park service is investigating the metal of this tablet to see if it is of the right age and not a hoax. It was found near Page Az. by the Park Service.
I remembered this story from a cousin that wrote a Fancher Book .{I don't have his name in front of me} I spoke to him on the phone in 1996 and he was very sure this event had happened! My line is James Porter Fancher in Noxubee co. Miss.
