Farias Family Genealogy Forum

Well, my father is deceased and we were separated for many years before we got back together [divorce] however, I was under the impression from things he told me that we hailed from Lisbon, and yes, it is true many Portuguese came to Fall River to work in the mills, and they were mainly from the Azores, I'm assuming they were very poor, however, prior to that there were a group from Lisbon that were already there, not many though. I'm just learning about my heritage, my fathers family was very poor growing up and my g-father died when I was a kid and living in England - his name was Manuel, I dont' remember him [my dad joined the Air Force at age 17] to get out of the poverty he grew up in Fall River - he had bad memories from there. I just remember my Aunt always said, "our name is really FARIA" - but she is gone too. I used to live in Fall River for a short time, and have many cousins who live there - Machado/Botelho/Farias. My g-mother died in the 80's so she is also gone. My father's youngest brother lives in Somerset I think now. His name is Paul Farias. I haven't talked to Paul in a few years. Last time I saw him was a few years ago when he came to visit us in SC. Anyway, I don't know if you know that FARIAS and FARIA are Sephardic names. There were Jews in Lisbon mainly but also some fled to the AZORES during the Spanish Inquistion. [Farias originated in Spain I believe] I vaguely remember my father talking of Madeira. So, that's all I know, but I am working on it. Many sephardims became catholic either by conversion or otherwise. "conversos" - The Holy Office of the Catholic Church of Spain lists "Farias" "Faria" as a Sephardic name - interesting to know, that I am married to a Jew.
