About my earlier reply to your response:I am in Galveston, TX trying to clean up after "Ike" and some days I have no business answering mail of any kind because I can't give it the response that it deserves.I am just too tired. That said, I can tell you who Lydia Angier is.She is the daughter of Susannah's brother, Ebenezer Farley, who married Lydia Coolidge in Boston, 27 May 1798.I will have to investigate the others.
If you are also on the MAESSEX mailing list, this won't be news to you.But for those Farleys who want proof of the ancestry of Mary Wise, here it is, much as I submitted it to the MAESSEX list:
Farleys who trace their roots to the marriage of Nathaniel Farley and Mary Wise, and Cogswells who trace their line to Jonathan Cogswell and Elizabeth Wise will be interested.
I warn you that there are a lot of Marys in this account, and even with the "playbook" it is hard to follow!
It is necessary for me to start with the family of Rev. John Leverett, President of Harvard from January 14, 1707/08 to May 3, 1724, and to continue chronologically with his descendants to get to part that concerns the Farleys and Cogswells.
Cambridge Vital Records give the births and deaths of the children of Rev. John Leverett and his wife Margaret [Rogers], who had nine children, seven of whom died in infancy or early childhood, leaving only two daughters who lived long enough to marry, both in Cambridge VRs:Sarah, b. 12 November 1700, who married Rev. Edward Wigglesworth 15 June 1726, and died childless 9 November 1727; and Mary, b. 29 October 1701, who married Maj. John 5 (John 4, John 3, Maj. Gen. Daniel 2, William 1) Denison.
Cambridge VR, marriages, p. 114:
Denison, Jno., Maj. of Ipswich and Mary Leverett, Apr. 9, 1719.*
Their daughter Mary Denison was born at Cambridge, home of her mother's parents, Rev. John and Margaret [Rogers] Leverett:
Cambridge VR, births, p. 200:
Denison, Mary, d. of Maj. _______, bp. 20 Mar 1720.
(Pretty skimpy, huh?)
Part of the reason that the baby was born in Cambridge may have been that Mary was only 18 when her baby was due, and she wanted to be with her mother. The other possible reason is that her mother may already have been obviously ill.Margaret [Rogers] Leverett died 7 June 1720.
John 5 Denison was promoted to Colonel and their son John 6 was born at Ipswich, 2 September 1722 [Ipswich VR].Mary [Leverett] Denison's father, Rev. John Leverett died 3 May 1724 at Cambridge, and her husband Col. John died five months later at Ipswich, 25 November 1724, leaving Mary with a four-year-old daughter, a two-year-old son, and only one living relative, her sister Sarah.I suspect that Mary went to live with her sister in Cambridge and that her brother-in-law was the children's guardian for a few years, but Sarah's death 9 November 1727 made that arrangement impossible. Her next nearest living relatives were her mother's Rogers family in Ipswich, and six weeks later, 25 December 1727, Col. Denison's widow married her first cousin, the Rev. Nathaniel Rogers.Mr. Rogers became the guardian of Mary and John 6 Denison.Essex Probate File #: 7567, File Date: 23 Sep 1729.Mary [Leverett] [Denison] Rogers bore eight children for Mr. Rogers, all born
at Ipswich:two died in infancy, two did not reach the age of ten, a daughter died unmarried at age 26, and three daughters married and died young:
Margaret Rogers, b: Abt. 14 December 1729, d: 27 March 1751, age 21.
+John Calef, m: Aft. 07 November 1747.
Elizabeth Rogers, b: Abt. 11 July 1736, d, 15 September 1774, age 38.
+Daniel Rogers, m: Abt. 08 March 1766.
Martha Rogers, b: Abt. 14 June 1741, d: 27 October 1780, age 39..
+Jacob Treadwell, m: 11 February 1762.
Mary 6 Denison married Daniel 4 Wise (Ammi Ruhammah 3, Rev. John 2, Joseph 1).
Newbury VR: p. 142:Denison, Mary, Mrs., and Captain Daniel Wise, both of Ipswich, Dec. 16, 1740.C. R. 7.
Ipswich, VR:
p. 397 Births:Wise, Mary, d. Daniel and Mary, bp. Dec. 13, 1741.
p. 398 Births:Wise, Daniel, s. Daniel and Mary, May 1, 1743.
p. 714 Deaths:Wise, Dan[ie]l, inf.s. Daniel and Mary, 10 September 1743.
p. 398 Births: Wise, Elizabeth, d. Daniel and Mary, bp. Sept. 9, 1744.
Ipswich VR:
p. 716, Deaths:Wise, Mary, w. Daniel, Sept 14, 1744.(five days after the baptism of her daughter Elizabeth.)
John 6 Denison died unmarried but testate in 1747, after his sister's death in 1744, but before his mother's death in 1756.His will was genealogically perfect. He named his "Hon'red mother Mrs Mary Rogers," his "Deceased Sister Mary Wise," "Mary & Elizabeth, the two Children of my sd Dec'd Sister Mary Wise," and his "Brother Daniel Wise."He left half his estate to his mother and half to his nieces, except for a silver watch and a roan horse to his "Brother Daniel Wise."
Then, Mary [Leverett] [Denison] Rogers died in Ipswich:
Ipswich VR, Deaths, p. 662: Rogers, Mary, w. Rev. Nathaniel, (and d. of Hon. and Rev. John Leverett, G. R. 1) June 25, 1756, a. 55 y. (1757, G. R. 1.)
Some time soon after that, Daniel Wise died.I have not found that record, but in Essex Probate, there is this:
File #: 30194
Name: Mary Wise (and Elizabeth)
File Date: 15 Jun 1757
Rev. Nathaniel Rogers was appointed guardian of his step-grandchildren, their mother (his wife) having died as above. With a houseful of small children, he married Mary Burnam, 1 April 1758.(Ipswich VR)
Mary Wise and Nathaniel Farley published their intention to marry 17 November 1764.
Elizabeth Wise and Jonathan Cogswell published their intention to marry 17 October 1767.
Rev. Rogers died intestate 8 May 1775, survived by Mary [Burnam] Rogers, who died 18 September 1779.
As a result of Rev. Rogers' guardianship of Mary and Elizabeth Wise, the final settling of the estate of Rev. Nathaniel Rogers and his widow includes a payment of twenty shillings from Nathaniel Farley and Jonathan Cogswell to the estate of Rev. Nathaniel Rogers for the care and education of their wives Mary and Elizabeth during their minority. That entry is followed by a payment of 100 pounds from the estate of Rev. Nathaniel Rogers to Nathaniel Farley and Jonathan Cogswell for their wives as the residue of the legacy left by John 6 Denison to his mother, Mary [Leverett] [Denison] Rogers.
Mary [Wise] Farley's first child was a son named Daniel, b. 26 September 1765.Her husband Nathaniel Farley already had a living son named Nathaniel by his first wife Elizabeth Cogswell. It seems quite possible that Jonathan and Elizabeth Cogswell's son Daniel Denison Cogswell was named after her own father with her mother's maiden name, and not just for General Daniel Denison.
What got me started on this line of investigation? After a fruitless search for "Mary Denison" I found in Hammatt's Papers, page 74, a footnote at the bottom of the page about John 6 Denison:"The silver plate from which he ate while at Harvard is still preserved in the family of Mr. Joseph Farley."The questions were these:How did Abraham Hammatt know that, and what was a Farley doing with the plate?Mr. Hammatt's wife was the widow Lucy Dodge, born Lucy Farley, a cousin (twice removed) of Joseph Farley, and Joseph Farley was a son of Nathaniel Farley and Mary Wise.Joseph Farley had died just two years before Mr. Hammatt "finished his labors."
Not only are Mary [Wise] Farley and Elizabeth [Wise] Cogswell descended from the venerable Rev. John Wise, they are descended twice from Major General Daniel Denison and from a host of the most highly esteemed men in Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Since some of this is work that has never before been published anywhere and corrects mistakes that have been made in published works on Cogswells and Denisons, and because it was a hair-tearing exercise that took years for me to finish, just give me credit when you use the information!

Cleaning up after "Ike"
If you would like a copy of John 6 Denison's will, give me a shout!I would definitely like a copy of Susannah Farley's, if you have the time and the means.
