- Diggers Find Tombstone -
A tombstone recording the death of a two-year-old child 118 years ago has been unearthed ten feet below street level at Houston and Chrystie Streets by workmen excavating for the Chrystie-Forsyth playground developement. The area once was a Presbyterian cemetery, according to the Park Department.
The headpiece is of brownstone and has been broken in half. It is seventeen inches wide and fourteen inches high. The inscription reads: " In memory of Hugh L. Farley, son of Alexander and Abigail Farley, who departed this life March 17, 1816, aged 2 years, 2 months and 14 days. " Under this is the following verse:
Sleep my babe,
And take thy rest.
God called thee home;
He thought it best.
The Park Department has not yet decided what to do with the tombstone. - New York Times.
