Your posting history shows only one message posted, so I don’t know how new you are to research in census records. Although census records are one of our best research tools, there are errors in them. In my experience the birth place of parents (which began in the 1880 census) has the most mistakes. But there can be other errors. Sometimes I think the enumerator listed the birth place of all the children in the same state, even when that was not the case. We have no way of knowing who gave the information to the enumerator. In the case of my family I think at times it must have been the neighbor down the road.

Having said all that I believe that this is the information for your Charles Wesley Farley. I noticed that the family moved back and forth from MO to IA, and that in the 1900 census, the birth place of Charles’ parents was given as Ohio. After that, the information varied from one census to the next.

1880 U. S. Census, Iowa, Dubuque City, Dubuque County

Frank J. Farley, age 30, b. OH, both parents b. Ireland
Catherine Farley, age 26, b. Wisconsin, both parents b. Ireland
Charles F. Farley, age 6, b. IA (middle initial and birth place wrong, age off by one year is not unusual)
Joseph C. Farley, age 3, b. IA
Michael Farley, age 80, b. Ireland, both parents b. Ireland, he is listed as father of Frank J. Farley

1885 Iowa State census (no birth places listed)
Frank Farley, 36
Kate Farley, 30 (Catherine)
Lucy Farley, 3
William Farley 1
Charles Farley, age 10
Mary Daley, age 25 (no explanation of relationship)
Apparently the child, Joseph, died between 1880 and 1885

In spite of inconsistencies, I do believe this is your Charles W. Farley and that his grandparents came from Ireland.

My Grandfather Farley was born in IA about 1861, but I do not see a connection to your line.
