St. Peter's Church

I have found records for my family (George Farnworth)in the Preston Record Office. The records for St. Peter's Church Chorley go back to 1850/51. Is that when the church was constructed / opened? If I want records(baptism, marriage) for that part of Chorley before 1851 where would I look?
Thank-you for any help.
