Clayton Alabama is located in Barbour County, Alabama and I think may have been (or is?) the county seat. Eufaula is a larger town (and probably the county seat now?) nearby. At one time, Eufaula was called Irwinton. My husband is related to SHIRLEY family formerly of Clayton, including John "Shug" SHIRLEY b @ 1829 in AL (Barbour County or Henry County, the lines changes) and his wife Natala Parthenica STOKES SHIRLEY. Both are buried in the OLD Sardis Baptist Church cemetary (a new church is closer to Eufaula). His parents were John b @1790 in SC and Elizabeth b @ 1794 in GA Shirley. Have you run into these names? I am searching for their parents, places of birth in SC and GA, etc. Good Luck. Virginia Shirley
