hi. thanks for your reply. i am a canadian mennonite. canadian mennonites came here from the ukraine )russia) in the 1900's, not the 1800's. they were invited to russia from prussia where they had been for a long time. it was while the mennonites were in prussia that germans joined them. the first mennonites were from the netherlands. menno simons was from the netherlands. the fasts are from the netherlands. from there they went to prussia (germany/poland) and then to russia. some left in the 1800's to the u.s. and s. america. others left in the 1900's when they were forcibly kicked out of russia by the bolshevek revolution. that's my family line. i recently found out that the fast's probably came from flanders area in belgium/netherland region. the fast name was probably vaast or van der fest originally. once the mennonites went to germany (prussia) it was there that the council decided to adopt german as their language and they dropped dutch. they also germanized their dutch last names. friesen was once von reisen. reimer was reijmer. etc. my parents went to the states years ago and stayed at an inn that was run by an american fast. he was the spitting image of my dad's dad. strong fast genes.
