FAULCONER lineage
Randelph de Lunkyis of France, from whom the Faulconer family is descended, was Royal Falconer of King William, the Lion of Scotland (?-1214).Lunkyis was taken prisoner by the English in 1174 and taken to England. In the time of King Edward II (1284-1327), a grant of arms was made to Sir John Le Faulconer of Derby and Nottingham, England.Branches of this family also held large landed estates in Scotland and Ireland.
The name Faulconer has been spelled Faulner, Falkiner, Falkner, Falconer, Faucener, and Fauconier. It is believed to have been given to its original holder because of this love of, or proficiency in, falconry, the sport of kings, which was popular in the Middle Ages.
Thomas Falconer, a minister of the Church of England, born circa 1594, was apparently the first of the family to come to America. At the age of 28, he sailed from London on the ship “Mary Providence” in the year 1622.He landed at Basse, the settlement of Nathaniel Basse, on the west side of Pagan Rivers Bay.He was later followed by his wife, Margaret.John Bennett Boddie in his “17th Century Isle of Wight County, VA” states that Rev. Faulconer was one of the early ministers of the old brick church (1642).In William and Mary Quarterly Vol 7 page 209, it is stated that until March 1642, Isle of Wight Co. had but one parish (Warwisquiake Parish) and that Rev. Thomas Faulconer was the minister. The descendants of Thomas Faulconer migrated up the James and Rappahannock Rivers.
The Faulconer-Falkners in West Virginia are descendants of Edward and Malinda (Hord) Faulconer of Gordonsville, Orange County, Virginia. In Gordonsville, the Faulconers were carpenters by trade.
