Edward Newman Faulconer obit (VA to WV)
Hinton, WV news article, 1926:
"Dr. Edward Newman Faulconer Taken By Death Monday Morning
The End Came Peacefully at 6:05 A.M. After an Illness of Nearly Six Months"
The entire community was shocked yesterday morning when it became known that Dr. Edward Newman Faulconer had passed away at his home on Summers street after an illness of six months. Although it was known that he was in a serious condition, outside of the members of his family only a few knew that the end was so near and his many friends here had hoped that with the coming of summer that he would regain his health. Dr. Faulconer, who was 57 years of age, died peacefully yesterday morning at 6:05 a.m. with his wife and three boys at his bedside. Death was due to a complication of diseases. He was taken ill near the first of December and while he was not able to leave his home he was not considered to be in a critical condition at that time, but he continued to grow steadily worse each day. He was taken to St. Luke's hospital in Richmond where he received all the medical attention possible, but the specialist there was unable to do anything for him. He was brought back to his home here where he remained until death came yesterday and ended his sufferings. He was conscious until the end and said many times during his long illness that he was not afraid to die. He passed away quietly and without any struggle or pain. The deceased was born in Gordonsville, Virginia, and came to this city when a young man. He passed the state board of examination for Pharmacists with the highest grade at that time. Mr. Faulconer had been in the drug business for the last 35 years and was considered one of the best pharmacists in the state. He opened and owned one of the first drug stores in Hinton and was in business in this city ever since he came from Virginia with the exception of two years which he spent at White Sulphur Springs where he opened the first drug store at the famous Greenbriar hotel. For the last ten or eleven years he had been connected with Pucketts and Johnson's Pharmacy. He had also been affiliated with many other business enterprises during his residence here. Dr. Edward N. Faulconer was one of the best liked men of this community and was well known in Hinton and surrounding communities. To know him was to love him as he was always kind, gentle and considerate of everyone. He was a kind father and a loving husband, and he always put his family first. In talking of him last evening a resident of this city said he was one of Hinton's finest citizens and that in all the years he had known him he had never heard him say a word against anyone. He was a devout member of the First Presbyterian church of this city, and took an active part in the work of his church. He was a Mason and a charter and life member of the B.P.O.E. The deceased was married twenty-five years ago to Miss Clyde C. Flanagan and to this union four children were born, and it has often been said that the family was one of the happiest in Hinton. All through Dr. Faulconers illness he was cheerful and patient. His wife was at his side practically all the time and she and her children did everything possible to comfort him. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Miss Alice Faulconer, who graduates this year at Marshall College, three sons, John a member of the Hinton Daily News staff, Newman, who graduated last week from Hinton High school and who is planning to enter the ministry, and Thomas. Three sisters, Mrs. B. L. Moorefield, of Beckley; Mrs. George Kyle, of Clarksburg; and Mrs. G. H. Overholt, of Jenkins, Ky., and one brother, B. Faulconer of St. Augustine, Florida. Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock with the Rev. J. W. Rowe, pastor of the church, in charge of the service. Burial will take place immediately after the funeral at Hill Top cemetery.
