Hello Rosemary,
It's a bit of a long story with some guesses but here goes - John Fawcett married Anne Just in St Dunstan's Stpeney 1794. He was a linen draper and had his own business and then in partnership in London. His children were Eleanor 1794,Edward 1797 Mary ann 1798 and Harriot 1800 - all in London various places. His last known address was in Aldgate in 1804. The family then disappeared from the area with no more references to a linen drapery in any London directories. No evidence of burials in the city either.
Son Edward whom I am descended from then turns up in Kendal and marries Mary Hutchinson d of Tobias H and Elizabeth (maybe Adlington)in Kendal in 1822 He is a Tallow chandler and grocer, flour and tea dealer in 1829. There is no evidence of any of the rest of his family in Kendal. his children are called John Adlington, Edward Tobias, Philip, Harriot and Frances Ann.
Another possible link is Benjamin Fawcett Sinkinson who was a tallow chandler in the same street.(A margaret Sinkinson bn 1812 is named in family prayer book originally owned by father John and presumably passed down the line through Edward.)
I can't believe Edward would end up in Kendal from London unless there were relatives there. Hence my theory that father John must have come from the area. There are a lot of Edward, john's and Eleanors in the area and a lot of movement between kendal and Dent so that is why I am looking there. (I can find no obvious link in London)
Hope this is clear!
Anne
