Guy Fawkes or Fawks?

I've seen both spellings for Guy Fawkes.
(Fawkes/ Fawks). Any opinions?
Also looking for the UK / US link to
FAWKS. Earliest Known in US is Levi Thomas
Fawks, died 1780 in a British bastille.
Dan Fawks
