Articles in the Lancashire Evening Post of 23/24/25/29 October 1951 will give the full details of the fraud.
Briefly the terms of Nicholas Fazackerley's Will created a mystery of estates in Lancashire which could have been unclaimed. A certain Frank Whitehead of Preston got on to this and from the early 1920 got possible claimants (i.e. Fazackerley's) to buy "shares" so that he could employ Solicitors to investigate the matter. The money went into his pocket! He was brought to book in 1951 and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment. He was then aged 77.
An Uncle of mine did pay some money in the early 1920's. It was always a source of conversation on the afternoon of Christmas Day when the family met at my Grand Parent's house for Christmas Lunch.
