Dear Helen:
For the past year I have been doing intensive research on the Feenys/Feeneys of Tullybaun Townland, Clonbroney Parish, Co. Longford. My gggrandparents Patrick and Elleanor(Cavnagh)Feeny farmed a little over 12 acres of leased land there (1854). Griffith's Primary Valuations lists Col. Wray Palliser as the intermediate lessor. Tullybaun only has 71 3/4 acres. There were 3 other households: Robert Currin, John McManus and John Feeny, who farmed about 12 acres. John Feeny was married to Catherine (Lynch). Although I have not found a marriage record for them, I have found and copied church baptismal records for four of their five children. The following citations are from LDS Film No. 1279229: (1) Rose Feeny bp August 1, 1850 -sponsors: Francis Currin and Elleanor Lynch (Tullybaun) Item 11, p. 1; (2) John Feeny bp April 15, 1853 - sponsors: Henry Smyth and Mary Carrighy (?) - (no townland given) Item 11, p. 59; (3) James Feeny bp May 22, 1855 - sponsors: James Feeny and Anne Feeny (Tullybaun) Item 11, p. 89; (3) Elleanor Feeny bp October 16, 1859 - sponsors: ? Laughrey and Sara Laughrey (no townland given) Item 11, p. 159; (4) Patrick Feeny - October 15, 1861 - unfortunately I missed this notation, but in LDS Film No. 1279270 (Index) the citation given is Film No. 1279229, Item 11, p.363, and I do plan to reorder and review this film again; (5) Thomas Feeny bp December 30, 1864 - witnesses: John Feeny and Rose Feeny (Tullybaun) Item 12, p. 17. I believe that John Feeny and Patrick Feeny were brothers. Elleanor Feeny was buried on October 23, 1865 (Item 12, p. 455), and Patrick Feeny died in Tullybaun on June 16, 1871 (Civil Reg. certificate), buried June 18, 1871 (Item 12, p. 461. My ggrandfather Michael Feeny was the son of Patrick and Elleanor (Cavnagh) Feeny. I did not find a baptismal record for him in the Clonbroney Parish records (many of the early entries which start in 1828 are illegible or missing). Michael Feeny from Tullybaun married Anne Kiernan from Killeen Townland which is a short distance to the east. They were married at St, Mary's RC Church in Granard on January 22, 1872 (Civil Reg certificate and LDS Film No. 1279228 Item 3, p. 9, entry 56). Michael and Anne (Kiernan) Feeny had three children: Patrick Joseph Feeny(my grandfather) b. April 24, 1873 in Killeen (Civil Ref. certificate), bp April 26, 1873 (Item 3, p. 9, Entry 380), Catherine Feeny (no civil reg found) bp December 13, 1874(Item 3, p. ?, Entry 583), and John Francis Feeney b. June 2, 1880 in Providence, RI) Michael Feeny emigrated to Providence, RI USA in July 1876, whereupon the spelling of the family name was changed to Feeney.
There are a number of Feeny/Feeney families in this general area of County Longford.. The best source for them and other families is David Leahy, County Longford Survivors of the Great Famine. Limerick: Derryvin Press, 1996. This book includes a very detailed townland map of the county, and he will do lookups for you in Griffiths and the 1825 Tithe Applotments Its cost is US$25 and can be ordered from Derryvin Press 24 Ashling Heights, Raheen, County Limerick, Ireland. I have additional genealogical information on the Feenys in and around Clonbroney as well as in Rhode Island USA. I would be very happy to learn about my Australian Feeny/Feeney cousins. My e-mail address is I hope this information is helpful to you.
Kindest regards,
William (Bill) Feeney (Edwardsville, IL USA)
Kindest regards
