William Henry Long was born to Feldt parents but was adopted by Henry Long and his wife Anna Elizabeth Friesleben around the turn of the century. He was either born in 1899 or 1900, but I'm pretty sure it was 11 July 1900.
As the story goes, his father and at least one older brother were on a hunting trip. While away, mom, and most of his siblings died of botulism (or something similar). Afterwards, all the remaining children were adopted and split up among adoptive homes. (Not sure what happened to the father, although one source leads indicates that an August Feldt was found on the 1900 census living with his sone Emile in Leonore, but I am having trouble locating the record).
We suspect the other two surviving Feldt children were named Rose (female) and Christopher (male). It is possible their given names were changed upon adoption, and likely their surnames changed at a minimum.
Any information on the other children, or the birth parents of William Henry Long (perhaps Wilhelm Heinrich) would be greatly appreciated. We know they lived in the LaSalle County, Illinois area, possibly in Leonore.
