FELT/FELTT

I am descended through Abner Felt and Mary Heald. However, our most immediate Felt line spelled it Feltt. In particular, my 3rd great-grandfather, William (b. 11/20/1794, a son of Abner and Mary), adopted a second "t" at the end of his name. He married Susanna Smith. They both died and are buried in Jay, Essex, NY..she in 1841; he in April 1860. Does anyone have any information on the William Feltt and Susanna Smith families? Does anyone know why a second "t" was added to the surname?
