Barbara, I just repeated your reference to Samuel being married to Mary Bull Webster.I have no actual reference to her, other than in your original message. However, after reviewing my data, it is probable that I have confused Samuel Fenby of Boston with Samuel Fenby of Baltimore.I erroneously stated that the Samuel of Baltimore married Catherine (unknown).I believe that this actually should apply to Samuel Fenby of Boston. The IGI lists "Samuel Finby [spelled with an 'i'] m. Catherine Vinto 03 Mar 1808 Suffolk Co., Boston" and additionally "Catherine (Vinto) Fenby, born 04 Nov 1790 Essex, Salem [MA]".Additionally, this Samuel Fenby is listed in the 1810 census simultaneously with the Baltimore Samuel, although in different states:
Samuel Fenby, Suffolk Co., MA, p170, Boston Ward 2
Samuel Fenby (no age given), to America 1803; sources: Filby and Meyers, 1982 supplement to "Passengers and Immigration Lists Index" and Kenneth Scott, 1979, "British Aliens in the United States During the War of 1812" [Note: this individual may be Samuel Fenby of Boston since he is not listed in the 1800 census]
The data and sources that I do have for Samuel Fenby of Baltimore is as follows:
Samuel and Peter Fenby, 178?, immigrated to Maryland; sources: William Matthew Marine, 1913, "The British Invasion of Maryland 1812-1815", pub. Society of the War of 1812 in Maryland. [I believe that the "178?" may refer to date of immigration rather than their birth dates because the 1800 census lists Samuel in the 26-45 age group which would place his birth before the 1780s and Peter as over 45 years placing his birth before 1755]
Census Records; source AIS:
1800 Maryland Census: Samuel Fenby, Baltimore City, MD, p203, 00010-11100-00
1810 Maryland Census: Samuel Fenby, Baltimore Co., MD, p016, Baltimore city Ward 8
1820 Maryland Census: Samuel Fenby, Baltimore Co., MD, p381, 10th Ward
1830 Maryland Census: Samuel Fenby, Baltimore Co., MD, p385, 10th Ward
1840 Maryland Census: no entry for Samuel Fenby, Baltimore Co., MD
1850 Maryland Census: Samuel Fenby, Baltimore Co., MD, p086, 4th Ward Baltimore
Then, of course, there are the Baltimore militia records which I have previously mentioned.
What we can see from the data is that one Samuel Fenby is present in Baltimore, MD, by 1800.He is married and has two young daughters suggesting that he was present in America at least in the 1790s.He is listed as being 26 to 45 years of age, however, since his wife is listed as 16 to 26, I suspect that he is closer to the 26 end of his age group.Since I find no record of "your" Samuel Fenby immigrating to either Baltimore or Maryland but do find Peter Fenby, I suspect that they are related.Peter Fenby is listed as being older (over 45 years old) in the 1800 census and is in the same Baltimore City Ward as Samuel.Later records (1812) identify both Samuel and Peter Jr. living near each other and serving in the same militia regiment. The fact that there is a Peter Jr. implies that there is a Peter Sr.How these three Fenbys are related, I do not yet fully understand.
