What you say is well put. Broadsides, in the form of questions, sometimes reawakens the sleeping facts one takes for granted.
Alan Anderton from Australia [originally from Wigan, Lancs] is a good friend; we have been debating the Anderton/Fenwick question for some time.
If you are interested take a look into the ‘Anderton Forum’ [message no 248] where it all began. In the meantime, the following is part of the research we have been pursuing:
JOHN ANDERTON OF BIRCHLEY HALL
(1628? - 1675)
[TOBACCO MERCHANT]
Seventh and youngest surviving son of Roger Anderton (1570-1640) of Birchley Hall, Gentleman, by Anne, [buried Wigan 14th September 1646] daughter of Edward Stanford of Perry Hall, Perry Bar, Handsworth Staffordshire, by Mary, daughter of Henry Shelly of Mapledurham Hants.
Location:
Birchley Hall, Maryland USA
Born/Bapt:
Born Birchley Hall, Lancashire, England 1628/1629 (authors calculation)
On 9 April 1664, John Anderton, aged 36, deposed…(ARM 49:206-207).
Died/Buried:
Died [and was buried the same day] at Liverpool 29th July 1575 [aged around 47 years]
Married:
Gertrude (born about 1635/6: IGI Internet Ped Sources), daughter of Captain Thomas Smith of Kent Island VA (as it was then). USA, by Jane Fenwick (born abt 1617 in Hadleigh, Suffolk or 1617 Saint Mary’s City, Saint Mary’s, Maryland or Ponteland Northumberland 29th Nov 1618, dau of John Fenwick by Jeneta Pye] married Thomas Smith abt 1634 and died 28th Feb 1659/60; will extant). Gertrude proved the will of her husband John Anderton 18th August 1575.
Gertrude was possibly born in c1634 rather than 1630, as Jane her mother was born abt 1617.
(See also Dugdale’s Vis of 1664)
Issue:
1.Roger Anderton; mentioned in his grandmothers [Jane Eltonhead] will; born Maryland USA, buried Liverpool 26 July 1675 - three days before his father - must have been a rough sea voyage! Or did they succumb to the ‘sweating sickness’ that was always prevalent at those times.
2.John Anderton
3.Francis Anderton Will filed in Dorchester County 7 Dec 1713.
4.Gertrude Anderton born Talbot, Maryland, USA <1672> (IGI)
5.Jane Anderton born Talbot, Maryland, USA <1674> (IGI)
Will, Inventory, Administration etc:
Will dated 29th July 1675 and proved [Chester] 18th August 1675
Tony
PS Thanks for the info on the Will.
