Josephine Hewitt
February 13, 1919-June 16, 2005

Josephine Hewitt, age 86, formerly of Rodney, Iowa died Thursday, June 16, 2005 at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20, at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa with Pastor Karen Handke officiating. Burial was in Grant Cemetery near Rodney, Iowa. Music for the service was "His Eye Is On The Sparrow", "On Eagles' Wings" and "Could I Have This Dance". Visitation was Sunday, June 19 after 4:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Mapleton.

Josephine Margaret Hewitt was born one of 10 children to Harry and Cora (Hessig) Ferdig, February 13, 1919, at Mapleton, Iowa. She grew up and was educated in the area. On July 3, 1936, she was united in marriage to Claire Hewitt at Onawa, Iowa. For 62 years, the couple made their home in the same house in Rodney, Iowa except for the time Josephine accompanied her husband while he was on the road working in construction. They both moved to Char-Mac Assisted Living in Lawton, Iowa in 2003. Claire passed away August 2, 2004. In March of 2005, Josephine entered Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City where she resided until her death.

Josephine was a gifted cook, raising and preserving all she could from her garden. She and her husband shared a sincere love for dancing. They were also very involved in their community, donating time, food, talent, or whatever was needed for the moment at hand, especially the Rodney Senior Citizens. Above all, Josephine was a happy friendly spirit, with a total dedication to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Norma King of Sioux City, Iowa; a son, Jan Hewitt and his wife, Lynda, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; a daughter, Joetta Burkhart of Lawton, Iowa; seven grandsons; three granddaughters; 23 great grandchildren; and one brother and his wife, Robert and Hazel Ferdig of Kansas along with many good friends.

Along with her husband of 68 years, Josephine was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Garry; one son-in-law, and eight brothers and sisters.

Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters, Jodi Lieber, Tonya Crowl and Holly Lansink.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Mark King, Jeff Hewitt, Todd Burkhart, Joe Hewitt, Jerry King, Jamie Hewitt and Justin Hewitt.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
