I have a real problem translating 'ferra-by' as 'place where the ferry docks'. This to me is a facile and at best bogus transliteration [as has been said] of the particle 'ferra'.
I think the best (and oldest) explanation is that 'fere' or 'ferra' goes way back to some older meaning .
We do agree that this name comes from the Viking (read 'Danish') which ended in -by.
