One of my great great grandfathers was Francis Fergus. According to our family history Francis Fergus went by the nickname of Jake Fergus. He was a cattle driver and good all-time cowboy. He made his way, from where I don't know, to Bethany, Mo., where he met and married Laura Smith in June of 1845. They had four children: Isaphina Fergus Whitehead, 1850 (later to become the mother of my grandmother Iva May Thompson); Parmelia Jane "Minnie" Fergus Wilcoxen, 1860; Sue Fergus Carter: and Anna Fergus Vandivert. Francis and Laura also had a foster son, Joseph Herron. That is about all the information I have except for a copy of Parmelia's obituary which includes the following information: Parmelia Jane, daughter of Francie and Laura Fergus, was born in Harrison County, Missouri, July 20, 1860. She grew to womanhood near Bethany, Mo., and on Oct 23, 1896 was united in marriage to Isom C. Wilcoxson of Eagleville. In regards to Isaphina Fergus, she married Jesse Washington Whitehead sometime around 1880. They had three children: George Bert Whitehead, born July 9, 1882, died 1953 in Bethany, Mo.; Iva May Whitehead Thompson (my grandmother), born June 23, 1887, died August 10, 1970 in Hoisington, Ks; and Roxie E Whitehead, born May 8, 1898 at Bethany, Mo., died 1976 at Cozad, Neb. Iva May Whitehead married Ruben Franklin Thompson on January 21, 1907 in Benkelman, Neb. They had ten children: Audra; Leona, Raymond, Mildred, Russell, Mary, Jay (died when one year old), Gordon (my father), Norman (our family historian), and Donna. If any of this matches your family I would love to hear from you.
