Hi John, thanks for getting back to me! I certainly will keep you posted on anything I turn up.

John Fergusson is complete mystery in our family. Tonight I went to my folks house and lubricated my Dad (87 years old) with a few shots of good rum and got this out of him:

Apparently, James Fergusson was a bum of some sort, perhaps a gambler, a drinker, or all 3 :) Either he died or he up and left for the US sometime in the late 1800's, I'm not sure which (I have found a death record for him in Missouri USA in 1900 but it could be a fluke). Supposedly, in any case, his wife Margaret (Lyall) Fergusson DID come to the US and died in International Falls, Minnisota sometime after 1914, perhaps around 1925 (unconfirmed). James and Margaret's children were sent off to live with an uncle in the Orkney Islands, on the Island of Hoy. I don't know the mame of this uncle but he was supposedly a "customs inspector". My father didn't even know there were any girls in the family, so maybe only the boys went to Hoy..

John reportedly left for sea from England, joining the East India Tea Trade as a midshipman. I'm guessing this was sometime around the age of 18, perhaps in 1884 or so.. Apparently he and my grandfather didn't get along too well.

Should this fellow John turn out to be the man you are looking for, I'll undoubtedly have more ancient history to share with you. In any case, keep my address on your list and stay in touch.. somewhere, if we go back far enough, we're sure to be related :)
