Bob, what a mess! Too many John Fernalds and too many Miriams. I have the 3-vol Wentworth Genealogy, one of the better genealogies out there, but while there are a lot of Furnald/Fernald listings, there are no parents for the John Fernald who married Sarah Wentworth. Information about their children and descendants...just no parents for John, but we know he was James. I also have Remick's Kittery and Eliot in the Rev War, published 1901. It was Remick's edition with his handwritten annotations (belonged to my grandfather who was Portsmouth/Kittery historian), and in that book are a bunch of Fernalds, including James born 1749 and who married Mary Stacey in 1769. It says in the margin that they moved to Wolfeboro, NH. Then there is John Fernald 3rd, private, no age or wife listed. Also John Fernald 4th, private. Says he was age 21 upon elistment in 1776, making his birth year 1755. Remick says "It is hard to identify the persons of this name (meaning Johns), as there were four or more living in the town at this time." NO KIDDING!

This is MY GUESS at this point for the father of Miriam Fernald who married Paul Lewis: John Fernald Jr who married Dorothy Main in 1730 had a son named John (who may very well have been called John III) born in 1738. He married Miriam Lewis in 1759. I think they had two children, John Fernald III b 1761 (his father may have become the "jr" now since the grandfather John Jr had died)and Miriam Fernald born ca 1765 who married my Paul Lewis.

John III and Miriam, these children, were named in a division of their father's estate in 1794, not a will. I should not assume that the father had died when the division was done. What if the father had died in 1773 and the wife Miriam who you say died in 1794 (kind of a coincidence, huh?) was allowed to remain in the house until she died? You and I both know that estates can be divided among children long after the actual decease if the wife is allowed to remain in the house. Once she was gone, the estate was finally divided between the two children. Where did you find that John had died in 1773 and wife Miriam in 1794?

What do you think? Just my guess...means nothing at this point. It would be nice to think I could tie into the Wentworth family, but trust me, my poor dirt farmers of the Second Parish were not part of the Wentworth family.

As for John Fernald and Sarah Hincks, I have never researched them but I guess I will be to see if I can prove the above. I have also seen Hicks around the Kittery area at at time so will look for anything resembling that.

Enough rambling....

Debbie
