Emmett went to sleep waiting for Jesus to wake him on Friday afternoon, May 6, 2005 at 4:45 p.m., at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. His body has been cremated and no public services are planned at this time. A memorial has been established in his name.
Emmett Furnald, son of Charles William and Mary Gladys Briney Furnald Sr., was born July 14, 1934 in Oskaloosa, there he spent his youth. At age 16 he worked in a coal mine outside of Oskaloosa for a year. He then moved to Newton, IA, where he worked for Pete Dingeman as a dragline operator. At 17, he met “The Apple of His Eye”, Margy Dingman, the daughter of Pete & Doris Dingman. They courted for three years before marrying. They were blessed with two sons and two daughters. After 17 years of marriage, they decided to go their separate ways, although they always remained friends. Emmett was a caring and loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His favorite thing in the world, besides his children, was hunting mushrooms in the timber and fishing on the river bank.
Emmett is survived by his daughters: Doris Marie Furnald and Dorothy Eileen Furnald Geier, both of Oskaloosa; his sons: Daniel Jacob Furnald of Rose Hill and Darrin Edwin Calvin of Burlington, IA; eight grandchildren: Ginger Marie Furnald and Kristarra Shauntee McBride, both of Oskaloosa; Ashlyn Elizabeth Calvin of Burlington; Shawn Dell Lucas, Keith Eugene Lucas , Kyle Lee Garrett, and Nathan Jacob Furnald, all of Oskaloosa and Taylor Jacob Calvin of Burlington; five great grandchildren: Aaliyah Jean Lucas, Tylor Thomas Nelson, Andrew Wayne Nelson, Anthony Richard Courtney, all of Oskaloosa; a sister, Annie Brantingham of Cottonwood, AZ; and a brother, Charles Furnald, Jr. of Indianola, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Fred and James Furnald; and two sisters, Martha Brower and Mary Sample.
Emmett was diagnosed with lung cancer last July
