I believe your John Franklin Ferree was the son of Amos Ferree and Lavina J Bruner. They are in Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania on the 1880 census (spelled Feree) with 6 children, including 1 year old John.
On the 1910 census John is still in Westmoreland, with wife Katie and a few of his children. By 1918 (WW I draft record), he is in Youngstown, Mahoning Co, Ohio, with wife Margretha and more children. On the 1920 census in Ohio, his wife's brother, Dana McCalister, is living with them. And by 1930 he is with Margaret in Detroit, with a couple new children.
Google books has a record of a court petition for a divorce between Amos and Lavina. Amos disappeared in 1897 and Lavina sued for divorce on grounds of petition. Three of their children tesified, including John, that no one had seen or heard from him since. The petition was denied on the grounds that desertion wasn't proved.
Amos was the son of George Ferree and Francis Sippy. I have not been able to trace the line back further.
