I am also descended from Ignacio Ferreira.
He was born in Portugal on 1 November 1695, and baptised in the church parish of Nossa Senhora de Ajuda in Lisbon. He died on 24 August 1772 near Gouritsrivier. He was the son of Manuel Ferreira and Antonia Francisca van Altara from Lisbon. He was a crew member of the English East India Company Ship Chandos which was on the way to Lisbon from Bengal when it sank in heavy storms between 16 and 17 June 1722 near Table Bay Beach. Of the 70 crew members, only two drowned. He remained there as a soldier in the service of HOIK. He was a catholic who became a protestant. Later he got a loanfarm? "De Hartebeest Kuyl" over the Gouritsriver and in 1748 he purchased this. One Professor OJO Ferreira published the article 'Ignacio Ferreira 1695-1772, Portugese Founder of an Afrikaans Family' in Historia 38(2) November 1993.
From Charles A Hardy 'A Register of Shops in the Service of the English East India Company 1800' : Chandos English East Indiaman of 440 tons. Wrecked close to the Castle in Table Bay, next to the army on 16 June 1772, during a north-west gale while on a homeward bound voyage from Bengal. Of her crew of 70, two were drowned. She lies buried beneath reclaimed land.'
In the census/opgafrol? of 1752 Ignacio/Ignatius Ferreira and Martha Terblans had 9 sons, 3 daughters, 8 horses, 50 rundvee?, 900 sheep, 1 snaphaan?, 1 degens?, no slaves, wine stocks of gesaaides?. In the census of 1762 in Swellendam he had 3 sons, 1 daughter, 6 horses, 80 rundvee? and 600 sheep, 1 snaphaan?, 1 degen?
He married Marthe Terblans (Terreblanche) who had been baptised in Stellenbosch on 5 December 1717. She was the daughter of Estienne Terreblanche and Martha Le Febre.
If anyone has any further information on the family line pre-dating Ignacio, I would be very interested.
