The Fern name is also seen as Fearon, Ferren, O'Fearon, O'Ferren. One of the Irish branch of Ferns settled in Sharon County, Pennsylvania (very close to Ohio) and then emigrated further west to Kansas. They were coal miners and were looking for work in the mines of southeastern Kansas. This branch also worked coal mines in Sharon County, PA.
