Amy, a few years ago I confirmed that Earl and Lulu had only 4 children, all boys, through an oral history taken from Earl Jr. (nicknamed Babe), the last of the four boys. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago. There were no girls named Norma in the family, unless one died in childbirth or very young (quite common at that time) and Earl Jr didn't know about it, as he was the youngest in the family. (Earl and Lulu have a grandaughter named Norma - she's my aunt, and is still living in the suburban Detroit area, and her birthdate is 20 years different from the youngest boy.)

Amy, your husband's grandfather, Norm, was the brother of my grandfather, Jim. That makes your father-in-law and my dad (now deceased) first cousins, and your husband and I are second cousins. Nice to meet you, cousin-in-law. :-)

Are you in the Akron area? My grandfather, Jim (Norm's brother) moved his family from Akron to Detroit sometime in the late 30's, and that's where I was born. Jim was married to Rhea Denmire, and the story in the family is that Earl Sr. died in 1932, at the age of 52 and right in the middle of the Great Depression. Earl Jr (Babe) and another brother (Walt, I think) were still at home with Lulu, and Babe remembered days when he thought they were going to starve to death, because he had gone 2-3 days with no food. Eventually, my grandfather's father-in-law, Harold Denmire, took in Lulu and her two young sons as a favor to his daughter and her husband, and they lived with the Denmires for several years.
