Obituaries

Dorothy Ficke Deschamps - Missoulian - (Jan/4/2009)

RONAN - Our beloved wife and mother Dorothy Ficke Deschamps, 85, was relieved of her suffering and passed away in Sun City West, Ariz., Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Robert L. “Bob” Deschamps Jr.; and their four living children and their spouses, Robert L. “Dusty” Deschamps III (Becky), Judith Anne Bean (Harry), Anita Lea Lacher (Stephen), and Amedee Marie Tieman (Ken). She is now reunited with her youngest son Randy, who passed away in a farming accident in 1961 when he was 11 years old. Dorothy and Bob have nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. All of her family love her and miss her greatly.

Dorothy devoted her life to her children, the neighbor’s children and young people in general. She was very active with her college sorority, Alpha Phi, Chi chapter, where she served many years as the alumni rush chair. As her own children grew, she became active in their programs. These included 4-H, service as the Bonner School PTA president, Cub Scouts as a den mother, Boy Scouts and especially Campfire Girls, where she held several positions, leading to her being awarded the Seton award for local leaders and later the national Luther Gulick award.

Dorothy was born at her grandparents’ Blackfeet Reservation homestead on Birch Creek, 7 miles northwest of Valier on Nov. 20, 1923. She is the daughter of Martha Mae Gookin Ficke and Walter E. Ficke, but was raised on the homestead by her grandparents, Harvey A. and Anna B. Gookin. When she was born, she weighed a little over four pounds and when the doctor arrived later he allowed that “she wasn’t worth saving.” However, her grandmother put her in a shoebox set on the stove door and pulled her through.

Dorothy boarded with families in Valier to attend school and graduated from Valier High School in 1941. She then attended the University of Montana, where she joined Alpha Phi and met Bob. Dorothy and Bob married March 21, 1944, and soon began raising their family in Missoula, first at the family ranch on Mullan Road and then in 1945 on a ranch at Marshall Grade. In the late 1960s, Dorothy and Bob purchased a ranch near Browning and soon another ranch near Ronan. Dorothy and Bob spent several years moving with the seasons between Browning, Ronan and Missoula, where Bob was also involved in the real estate business.

Eventually they permanently settled in the Ronan area, where Dorothy was active in the Western Montana chapter of Cow Belles. In that capacity, she attended a national Cattlemen’s Association convention and unsuccessfully argued against changing the Cow Belles name to “Cattlewomen.” Dorothy and Bob retired from ranching in 1982, and since that time have spent summers on Flathead Lake and winters in Sun City West.

Dorothy always wanted a big party to celebrate her life and in accordance with that wish next summer a memorial celebration will be held at Judy and Harry Bean’s home on Canal Road, near Ronan.

The family suggests memorials to the Montana Council, Boy Scouts of America, or a charity of your choice.
