Let me answer your second question first. This is my synopsis for James Fears.

James Fears moved from Prince Edward County, Virginia to Halifax County sometime before 1772. He was already a resident of Halifax when he purchased land 19 Nov 1772. I believe this James Fears is the son of James Fears who lived in Amelia, later Prince Edward County, Virginia from 1747-1802. James Fears who died in Prince Edward left a son named James. By 1800 he moved to Pulaski County, Kentucky and probably died there but I don't have the support for this.

I can't recall where Colleen got Mary Fiers but the resources I have seen show Mary Fears married James Woodhall. In the book North Carolina Land Grants recorded in Greene County, Tennessee, a James Fiers was granted 200 acres along the Holsten River. This instance is the only time I have seen Fears spelled Fiers. The documentation proving James Fears move from Halifax to Grainger County is lacking; therefore, many Fears researchers who descend from the Grainger County, Tennessee Fears families have not made this leap of faith. Also there is no will for this James Fears.

One thing for sure, the pronunciation of these two surnames is quite different; therefore, unless Martin responds with a different way to pronounce Fiers, I doubt any connection between the surnames.
