Will,
Like so many other early immigrants, information is conflicting.Merilyn Fike Morrow gives two accounts in "Christian Fike and his Descendents".Both accounts name a John Fike, born in Switzerland as the immigrant ancestor with the acknowledgement that the first Fike we have definite info on is Christian Sr. who was married to Barbara (unknown). There is no definite info on Christian's birth country. He was Amish, lived in PA, and apparently was a weaver by trade.
I have a tiny book about Elder Aaron Fike (son of Peter and grandson of Christian Jr.) that states "Christian Fike's grandfather came from Hanover, Germany very early in the eighteenth century."
Elder Emra Fike (son of Elder Aaron) wrote a short account in another tiny book that states " We will begin with Peter Fike, Sr's great-great grandfather who came from Hanover, Germany, and was Amish by faith and weaver by trade. His son Christian, Sr., of whom nothing is known except that he settled in PA and had 3 sons, John, Jacob, and Christian, Jr."Morrow's book lists his daughters also. There is a story also in Morrow's book as well as Elder Emra's story about the conversion of Christian Jr. into his wife Christina Livengood Fike's Brethren faith.
After this conversion, the Fike family produced many Brethren ministers.
I'm not sure about Hanover Germany but, throughout history the lands along the Rhine River changed hands between the Swiss, Germans, and French so depending on the time frame an area now German might well have been Swiss controlled.
From everything I've ever seen, Christian Sr. did speak German.
