Babs, I think I can help if your George file dayes match ours. My great-great-great grandfather was Stephen File who married Mary Keller 23 Sep 1807. All their children were born at Barham, Kent. There children were : John,Thomas,Stephen,George(b.12/12/1813),Henry,Mary,William (my Great-great grandfather who married Sarah West and emigrated to new Zealand before coming to Australia),Edward ,Israel,Joseph,Emily and possibly Anne and elizabeth. I have birth dates for all the children except the last two.Stephen File (b.30 May 1784) had parents Thomas File and Ann who married 30 Oct 1778 and lived in the Elham area(sometimes spelt Elam) not far from Barham according to Parish maps.I think Ann's maiden name was Elgar which is used in a child's name. Most of the File family were farmers.I think thomas was a Yeoman.Thomas and Ann's children were :Ann,thomas,Stephen,Elizabeth,John, sarah,Hannah,Mary,Elgar (born in Elham area).I only have hunches about parents before that.Someone said Thomas file 's parents were John Vile and Elizabeth of Elstead but I don't think so. the name File goes back further than that in the area and I have listed File names back to the 1600s in Kent but haven't tied them together yet. Earlier in the 1500s the 'F' and "ph" were interchangeable in names and the "i" and "y" also , so you get all sorts of names like Fyle,Fyll,Feil,Pheil..Some even say there is a family crest for Foyle (which there is) but I haven't found the name change that links this. The IGI is great on the Familysearch website, but this forum helps people sort out the names and connections. I can send you more detailed info.if you like. Shirley File robbins of the USA helped me with research 10 years ago. I live in Australia, But I have info. about the New Zealand relatives of William Lavers File who stayed in new Zealand. Nearly all New Zealand and Australian File families are related somehow. It is an uncommon name here. Many relatives still in Sydney were I was born. My father was Ernest leslie File son of Francis George Norman File and Violet Macrae. His parents were Norman File and Emily Flook. They lived in Gisbourne New Zealand (was a dairy farmer). He was born in Barham 1850 and married in NZealand 18 April,1884.Hope this helps others. If anyone has traced back further I'd like to hear too. Sue
