Joseph Files was my ggggfather (my mother was a Files). All I know is that he was from Winchester, Virginia. I have yet to research the sir name itself. I dont know if it is English or possibly an Anglisized version of a Germanic sir name. Large numbers of German Immigrants settled into Northern Virginia and adjacent Maryland (ie; Hagarstown). If it is German that would make me about 50/50% English/ German.

The only hard data I have is Joseph Files in 1830 Census in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia

At least I know he existed.
