Robert FILES, VA>IA>WA, FALES in IA

Still looking for the parents of my Robert FILES, who left Oskaloosa, IA, with wife Harriet Ann FLETCHER and three children in 1862 to travel Oregon Trail to Walla Walla, WA, where they settled and had three more children. The 1860 IA census says Robert and Harriet both born VA, but a Walla Walla researcher says Robert born 12 May 1835 IA, and Harriet born Jan 1831, PA. They were married in Oskaloosa, IA, 7 May 1855. The dispute over birthplaces is confusing. An Oskaloosa researcher says 1835 is too early for anyone to be born in IA, which I find a strange position to take. I have found a J.T. FALES listed for Dubuque Co. in the Iowa Territorial Census of 1836. Does anyone know anything about this individual? Thanks very much, Patsy
