In the latest issue of "Family Chronicle" there is an article on "Searching or Sourcing". It states that a large quantity of information isn't worth anything if it is wrong. The " gold standard" for sources is printed original documents, hand written documents, military records, etc.(www.familychronicle.com) Online trees (unless carefully sourced) and books, LDS files, and oral family tradition are only starting points to lead us to source information. Although I have a rapidly growing database, I am barely started on the tedious, but necessary, task of searching for original documents, therefore I have not posted my tree online.
Having said this, I agree with you that we must not get into the bad habit of copying info from individual trees that do not provide references to original source documents, and then posting the information as if it is truth. We don't want to take the fun out of finding our kin, but we need to realize that most people doing genealogy online are beginners and just assume that everything people post is true. I posted the unsourced info I had on this Fillmore line as a way to spark a discussion and seek more accurate information. Thank you for your response.
As for the Fillmore book, it is available from www.higginsonbooks.com online. I have ordered a bound copy for my library and it takes about 8 weeks to arrive. Another good source for genealogy books about Maine/Canada that are out of print is Miramichi Books (www.abebooks.com/home/MIRAMICHIBOOKS).
I appreciate the hard work you have done to establish the authenticity of your line and I hope others will join us in this discussion. By posting here, and discussing source materials, many of us will find those elusive connections that we seek.
