The area in old Prussia (Preußen = Preussen "PROY-ssen) is ANHALT (ahn-hahlt). Preußen was one of the many German city-states that only became modern Germany after 1871 when Otto von Bismarck brought them together.

In Germany a grave is usually good only for 20 years; then it's reused. They crush the tombstones and use them to make roads. It's possible that some gravesites are still there, if family members kept using it as a family plot. But if no one paid every 20 or 25 years, it's gone. But the cemetery records may still be there. They don't throw the record books out. You'd be better off looking for a death certificate in the (city/town/village) archives or in the church books. Sometimes church records state which cemetery was used. Mormons (LDS) have probably filmed a lot of the church and city records. To find out where someone is buried, check with the "Standesamt" (Statistics Office), that's where all births and deaths are recorded. Look for the Standesamt in the on-line white or yellow page phone books.

In 1999, the cost of the Certificate of Death was ca UK£10.00 (ca U$16.00) plus the cost of a Bank Order or International Reply Cards (IRC) bought at postal outlets. Some people write first, then telephone and MAY be able to pay for everything after receiving the items. If not, use IRC's or be prepared to give your credit card number over the telephone or by mail.
