I am Looking for descendants of FINKLEA family members who lived in Alabama in the 1830's. Trying to find a "home" for my GGG-Grandmother, Mary Ellafair Adeline (or Adline) FINKLEA. She was born between 1829 and 1833, but I don't know where. Good chance it was in Alabama, but could possibly be SC. She married a Thomas BURFITT (middle initial G., probably Godfrey). They settled in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. They had at least 3 sons, Godfrey, Frank Edward and Robert H.She died 20 July 1900 in Selma, AL.
According to a Burfitt relative and records she has gathered; " copies of Civil War records, pension applications, census records, etc. I cannot confirm that Thomas' middle name was Godfrey. His son was Godfrey. Maybe he was also. He was killed in the Civil War, time, place and date unknown. Burial place unknown. Most of the Burfitt's are buried in Live Oak Cemetery in Selma, AL.
In 1860, Thomas and Ellafair sold their land in Benton, (Lowndes County) and moved to Selma (Dallas Co., AL). There is a T.G. BURFITT on the Lowndes County 1860 Census on page 523. He is located on the Hayneville PO Beat. This lists him as age 31, born in England and his wife, E.A. BURFITT was age 27 and born in Alabama. The oldest child listed was age 10 and born in Alabama.
There are several FINKLEAS in Wilcox County on the 1860 census, in Monroe County on the 1850 census, Covington County on the 1830
census. Finkleas lived in Butler County, as well. There are many FINKLEA families in South Carolina. I don't know where my Mary Ellafair Adeline Finklea (Ellafair when she signed her name, but E.A. on the census
document - I have no evidence of her using the name Mary) is originally from.
If anyone can place her with a family, please contact me!I believe there is a good chance she is the daughter of Willis
Finklea and Mary Bryant.Several of the children of Willis and Mary Bryant
Finklea moved to Alabama. They also had a daughter identified as Mary who as far as I know, it has not been determined what happened to her.She could be in the age bracket that I am looking for.Court records dated 1843 lists the children and names a child Mary who is shown as "a minor"
which I think would indicate she was under age 14.This would place her date of birth I think at abt 1829 to 1843.I think she is a prospect for my Mary, but there may be others.I believe Willis Finklea has an Elly Finklea somewhere in his family. Thanks!
