I note you have a Thomas McCARTNEY marrying in 1870. I have a Thomas McCARTNEY mystery. Do you have parental information on your Thomas McCARTNEY?
My ancestor, James MACARTNEY(sic), married in Manchester Cathedral in July 1846, occupation tailor, bachelor, age "full", father shows as William McCARTNEY (sic), bootmaker, on the marriage certificate.
The 1851 UK census shows James as born in Scotland, age 42, with children post-dating the marriage except for a Thomas McCARTNEY, age 8, so born about 1843 (which would make him about 27 in an 1870 marriage). I can't find this Thomas on the 1861 UK census. The 1841 UK census is unhelpful.
I believe James understated his age in 1851 by about 8 years (he also understates his age by a widening margin in succeeding censuses). As even age 42 is somewhat late to marry for the first time, I suspect he was previously married or in a previous relationship, and that Thomas may be a son from that time.
Any help would be appreciated.
Terry McCartney
