I have been researching my Findlay/Finlay family roots, and have been fortunate enough to find a lot of help from members of the same tree, if a different branch. Our tree starts in the Fife and Dundee areas of Scotland, an offshoot of the McFarquharson clan, as far back as approx. 1000. In the 1600's, the family had moved across to Northern Ireland, and eventually moved to the County Wicklow area in Ireland, specifically in the Donard/Glen of Imaal area. They were Wesleyan Methodists, at least my branch was, so finding some records of births, baptisms, and marriages have been difficult. The Finlays seem to have had a very small group of neighbours with whom they intermarried, most especially the Hawkins, and the Hanbriges. My Grx4 grandfather was Thomas D Fin(d)lay, and was born "in the shadow of Mt. Lugnaquilla" in around 1811. He had at least 2 brothers, who went on to Birmingham as clothing manufacturers, and when his father (?) died young, his mother married a Hawkins from the area, and had at least one son, who also emigrated to Ontario Canada in the 1830's, along with the rest of the Hawkins clan. They moved to the Huron county area, while Thomas settled in Lampton county. The only other family trait I have uncovered, is the passing down of German, as a given name amongst the men.
I will be in the Dublin and Wicklow area in the fall, and hope to be able to uncover some more of the connection. Any information, or suggestions for leads...would be very much appreciated. Im anxiously looking forward to my trip! thanks to all for their help....Gail Findlay
