Tom;To answer your last question, I am currently sending letters to Church parishes in West Cavan to try to locate Finlays. Will let you know results.
Re Wallace, there is a family plot in the Killashandra Church yard. (see Killashandra website). In 1850, there were numerous Wallace properties in the Killashandra area. This would not necessarily mean that Mary came from a wealthy family..in fact many landowners were having great difficulty because of the decline in demand for linen. Women had been employed in large numbers in that industry, but were (by 1840) forced to find other jobs or emigrate. (The population of Co. Cavan fell almost 30% between 1840-1850). It was common practice for girls to find work as domestic servants with more prosperous familys. A question..do you know the order in which David and Mary's children were born? This is often a clue to names of the grandparents. I'll be on the watch for "Wallace" when I am hunting through Griffith's. Thanks for your help.
