I'm trying to locate information on William Finlay born c1817 to 1823 and/or his father Robert.
According to the 1871 English Census, William was born in Belfast; otherwise all other references are simply to Ireland.
William moved to Bolton, Lancashire, England c1840 and in 1847 married Mary Ann Whittaker, then moving to Farnworth, Lancashire where he worked as a Tailor. His father Robert was also described as a Tailor on their Marriage Certificate. William was a Roman Catholic. William died in 1895; his wife Mary Ann in 1900.
There are a number of records of a William Finlay working as a Tailor in Belfast in various street and trade directories between 1839 and 1846, but these records also continue into 1850 so clearly probably relate to another William Finlay.
Comparing names in William and Mary Ann's family with those of his wife's parents and siblings, it seems probable that other Finlay family names may have included James, Hugh, Thomas and possibly John and Josiah, Mary Ann, Margaret and Alice.
I have located a Finlay family in Northern Ireland and containing the names Ann, Hugh, John, William and Margaret, but this William's y.o.b. is around 10-15 years too early. This family is also headed by a Robert, suggesting that if related the two fathers would have been no closer than first cousins.
I have no information other than in William's Marriage Certificate about his mother, father or siblings.
Does any of this history overlap with any that others might have?
