You may be descended from someone in this family. Many of the family lived in Eastern Ohio. Others lived in WV. I wish that I knew just where your Fanny fits in.

I found some probate information for a William Finnicum in Queen Anne's Co., Maryland. The most useful bit comes from a CD-ROM, "Family Tree Maker, CD206 Genealogical Records: Maryland Probate Records, Prerogative Court Abstracts, 1763-1770, Abstracts 1763-1770 (Libers 4 and 5),...,December 19, 1998". The interesting entry on page 82 says,
"William Finnicum              5.206       D       QA       [Pounds] 90.17.3       Jun 14 1769
       Sureties: Richard Heathers, Edward Burroughs.
Distribution to: Isabella (widow, accountant, 1/3). Residue to 4 children        (equally): Ann, Margaret, Stephen, William.
Administratrix: Isabella Barkhust, wife of James Barkhust."

From the dates, the younger William above appears to be the William Finnicum who died in Ohio in 1829. Mrs. Sara Finnicum once sent me the information,
"In 1829, Wm. died & is buried with his wife in Simmon's Ridge Cemetery Loudon Twp. Carroll Co. Ohio. (This would've been Harrison Co. in 1829 yet)
His stone is very readable for having been put there in 1829 - I've seen it. It reads -

FINNICUM In memory of William d. 8 July 1829 ae 66 yrs 4 ms 14 ds.
next to his stone:
FINICUM Frances Wife of Wm. Finicum d. 28 Oct. 1848 ae 75 yrs.

This stone is very weathered & was chalked to read.
Our 'genie' chapter copied & included this cemetary in our Vol II Lee & Loudon Twp. Cemetery book."

Sara Finnicum said, in a wonderful letter full of information about the Finicum/Finnicum family,
"There was supposed to have been a Finnicum family Bible printed in 1814 & last known owner - a Wm. Finnicum of New Rumley, Harr. Co., Oh. - No one knows where it is today.
I've never seen it! but some of the info printed about it regarding the family has checked out such as the tombstones in Simmons Ridge Cem. & on my husband's line."
"According to the 'supposed' Bible info Wm. & Frances/Fanney had 12 children. It says - She was 20 & he 28 at time of their marriage but gives no date or place of such event. The children listed are as follows:
1) Ann b. 26 May 1789 d. 12 Sept. 1816
       married - ?
2) Joshua b. 11 Dec. 1791 d. in infancy

(2nd Son named Wm. - my husband's line)
md. Maria Richards 28 Sept. 1822
in Harrison Co. Oh. but we've never been able to find        tombstones for either one back here. (One history says        Maria went to Adair Co. Mo. where she died.)
6) Mark b. 30 Nov or 31 Dec 1799
md. Phoebe Scott 18 Nov. 1828

The place for the Maryland probate records is identified by another entry from, "Family Tree Maker, CD206 Genealogical Records: Maryland Probate Records, Prerogative Court Abstracts, 1763-1770, Abstracts 1763-1770 (Libers 4 and 5),...,December 19, 1998". The portion of the document is identified, "This section appears at the back of Liber 5. 'Papers returned to the Prerogative Court beginning 20 February 1767.' The Prerogative Court in 1767." On page 108 under "Folio 13" in that section are some paragraphs headed "From Queen Anne's County, August 9."
h Bonds: Jonathan Barrett ... Samuel Wright, William Barkhust, Mathew Bryan, William Finnicum, William Bankes.
h Wills: ..."

Another interesting entry comes from "Family Tree Maker, CD206 Genealogical Records: Maryland Probate Records, Prerogative Court Abstracts, 1766-1769, Abstracts 1766-1769 (Volumes 91-100),...,December 19, 1998". On page 40 is the entry,
"William Finnicum       94.259 QA       [Pounds] 115.14.11       Jun 4 1767       Sep 3 1767
       Appraisers: John Redue, William Clark.
Creditors: John Vansant, Thomas & George Gilpin.
Next of kin: Jean Colyan, Mary Watkins.
       Administrator: Isabella Finnicum."

I think that I have finally have a theory that makes sense of the several William Finicums in the sources that I have seen. One good clue is a marriage from the GRS CD004, November 1994. It is a marriage record from "Maryland Marr., Kent, MD". It is for FINICUM, William and FISHER, Isabella, 06 Mar 1753.

The Finnicum typescript compiled by Cecil Garnette Finnicum (1895-1981) says,
"it seems certain that William Finnicum was the first one to come to this country, and it is probable that he first settled in Pennsylvania, and later in Maryland, and may also have moved to Ohio as the next generation is found in Carrol County, Ohio.
Of the children of William Finnicum Sr., nothing is known further than the fact that he left one son, of the same name. His wife's name is also unknown."

This marriage of William Finicum and Isabella Fisher appears to have formed a likely couple for the parents of the William Finicum who was born about 4 March 1763 (calculated from his grave stone) and who died in 1829. The elder William probably would have been born around 1720 if this was his first marriage. There is an Isabelle among the children of the younger William who may then be named after his mother, Isabella Fisher. The William whose probate records are noted above would be the father of Ann, Margaret, Stephen, and of the William Finicum born in 1763.

The 06 Mar 1753 marriage of "FINICUM, William and FISHER, Isabella" ties in neatly with two records that I extracted 02 Dec 1995 and nearly forgot. They come from the International Genealogical Index - 1994 Edition - Version 3.04. One says,
"Name: FINICUM, Ann
SEX:              F
EVENT:       Birth
              3 Jan 1754
              Shrewsbury Parish, Kent, Maryland
FATHER:       William FINICUM
MOTHER:       Isabella
SOURCE INFORMATION
Extracted birth and/or christening record for:
Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County, Maryland".

Ann certainly appears to be Isabella's first child by this marriage. The second record says,
"Name: FINICUM, Margaret
SEX:              F
EVENT:       Birth
              3 Sep 1756
              Shrewsbury Parish, Kent, Maryland
FATHER:       William FINICUM
MOTHER:       Isabela
SOURCE INFORMATION
Extracted birth and/or christening record for:
Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County, Maryland".

There appear to have been William Finicums in Maryland even earlier than 1753. There is a marriage on the GRS CD004, November 1994. It is a marriage record from "Maryland Marr., Anne Arundel, MD". It is for FINICOMB, William and WELLS, Jane, 24 Mar 1715. These may have been the parents of the William Finnicum whose probate records are above.

The William Finicum born in 1763 may have been born at the parish in Kent Co., Maryland, or he may have been born in Queen Anne's Co. where his father died. I wonder whether this family was one of the Scotch-Irish who settled on Maryland's East Shore and migrated north and west thru Pennsylvania from there.

One interesting clue from the probate records is the identification of "Administratrix: Isabella Barkhust, wife of James Barkhust." There is a James Barkhurst listed in "CD 136, 1st Edition, MD PRE-1790, Queen Annes Co., MD 1778". His township is listed as "Chester Hundred" with a record type of "CT". I wonder whether William was living in his stepfather's household in 1778; William would have been age 15 then.

In "CD 151, 1st Edition, OH 1796-1809, Jefferson Co., OH" are listed three Barkhursts including a William Barkhurst in 1807, 1808, and 1809. William Finnicum was listed in Washington Co., PA in 1800 and 1810. I wonder whether these Barkhursts influenced him to move to Ohio by 1820. Isabella may even have been living in Ohio with a son named Barkhurst/Barkhust.

Other clues from the probate records are the "Next of kin: Jean Colyan, Mary Watkins." I wonder whether these are sisters of the William Finnicum who died by 1767. I suppose that one could be his remarried mother; perhaps Jean Colyan is the Jane Wells who married in 1715. Or they could be even more distant relatives, I suppose.
