Captain E. J. Barnes died in Arkansas on 4 Sept. 1868 according to a petition filed at the
Jackson County Probate Court at Holton, KS. The petition was filed “In the matter of the
estate of Captain E. J. Barnes late of Arkansas, deceased”. Lucy Finicum Barnes Ewbank
stated “...that on or about the 4th day of September A D 1868 in the state of Arkansas
Captain E. J. Barnes departed this life...”. This petition was filed on the “6th day of April
1882”. Lucy filed a petition to be declared the administratrix of the estate of "Captain E J
Barnes late of Arkansas deceased" in order to give her authority to pursue a claim "against
the United States government for horses killed during the late war which belonged to"
Captain E. J. Barnes. Case Broderick and W L Balson signed as the sureties on her
administrator's bond on 6 April 1882.

Charles Webster’s interest in E J Barnes has led me to review the family group records that a cousin sent
me several years ago.

Your Family Group Record-680 says that Ebenezer Barnes was born “Abt 1820”.

I think that E. J. Barnes was born closer to 1829 in Richland Co., Ohio.

The National Archives in Washington, D.C. has copies of the Civil War military records of
Ebenezer "E.J." Barnes. He enlisted in Company E of the Kansas 5th Cavalry at Ft.
Leavenworth on July 22, 1861. According to his enlistment records he was born in
Richland Co. Ohio; he was six feet tall with blue eyes and brown hair. An Individual
Muster-in Roll dated L. R. Ark., Nov. 30, 1863 notes that Ebenezer J. Barnes is age 34
years. The remarks are "Promoted from 1st Lt. to Captain Vice Lockhart died. Muster in
to take effect from Nov. 1 1862, having complied with Par. 8 Gen. order No. 48."

E. J. must have been born in 1829 to be correctly reported as age 34 in Nov. of 1863.

This entry in the Kansas Census of 1865 enumerates Lucy and E.J. Barnes. Maud's little
sister, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Barnes, was part of the household by then. The entry of
Oskaloosa Twp., Jefferson Co., Kansas with a post office of Cook's End is dated 9 May
1865.

Barnes, E.J. is age 36, a white male, born in Ohio.
L is 31, a white female, born in Ohio.
Finnicum F is 17, a white female, born in Ohio.
Barnes J W is 14, a white male, born in Ohio.
T G is 10, a white male, born in IA.
M is 6, a white female, born in KS.
E is 4, a white female, born in KS.
Hartshorn B is 16, a black male, born in KY.

Note that E. J. Barnes was reported to be age 36 in 1865.

An entry of Oskaloosa Twp., Jefferson Co., Kansas with a post office of Oskaloosa is
dated 26 July 1860.

Ebenezar Barnes is age 30, male, a clerk in dry good store, born in Ohio.
Lucinda is age 26, female, born in Ohio.
Jay is age 10, male, born in Ohio.
Tom is age 5, male, born in Iowa.
Mary is age 1, female, born in Kansas.
Fanny Finicum is age 14, female, born in Ohio.
William Barnes is age 28, male, born in Ohio.

Note that Ebenezer Barnes is listed as age 30 in 1860.

The Family Group Record-680 says that Ebenezer Barnes died in “Arkansas, USA”.

Captain E.

Captain E. J. Barnes. Case Broderick and W L Balson signed as the sureties on her
administrator's bond on 6 April 1882.

The Family Group Record-680 does not say when or where Lucy Finicum married
Ebenezer Barnes.

Ebenezer "E.J." Barnes and Lucy Finicum married in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Lucy married E. J.
Barnes on 10 Aug. 1857 according to her pension application. The Weekly Oskaloosa
Herald of Mahaska Co., Iowa, on August 14, 1857 reported the marriage, "On the 11th
inst., at the residence of Silas Scott, Esqr., by the same, Mr. Ebenezer Barnes and Miss
Lucinda Finecum, all of Oskaloosa, Kansas.".

The Family Group Record-680 says that the parents of Ebenezer Barnes were J Wesley
Barnes and Mary Smith. What sort of documentation do you have of that relationship?

All that I have seen is an 1856 census record from Iowa. Wesley Barnes' family is listed in
the 1856 Mahaska Co. Iowa Census for Harrison Twp. Page 814 contains the following
entry:

Westley Barnes is 60 in age, male, married, 4 years resident in Iowa, born in
Maryland, Farmer, Native voter, not Owner of Land.
Mary Barnes is 56 in age, female, married, born in Pennsylvania.
T N(?) Barnes is 29, male, born in Ohio, Farmer, Native Voter.
E J Barnes is 27, male, born in Ohio, Farmer, Native Voter.
Samantha Barnes is 22, female, born in Ohio.
Albert N(?) Barnes is 12, male, born in Ohio.
Robert McBride is 14, male, born in Ohio.
Thomas G Barnes is 2, male, born in Iowa.
J N(?) McFarland is 73, male, born in Ohio.

This appears to record E J Barnes in the household of Wesley and Mary Barnes. It does
not state any relationships, however, so E J could be any visiting relative (or non-relative).

The Family Group Record-680 does not say when or where Lucinda Finnicum was born.

An unpublished genealogy, "The SHRIVERS" of Clearcreek Township, Ashland County,
Ohio "Expanded and Updated from the original by Albert T. Shriver from 1977-1979",
gives the birthdates of the children of Mark Finicum and "Phoebe" Scott as:
Elizabeth Finicum              2 Nov 1829
John Finicum              8 Mar 1831
Lucinda Finicum              12 May 1833
Mary P Finicum              28 Sep 1836
Jason L Finicum              8 Mar 1841
Francis A Finicum       14 Aug 1845
Marsha I Finicum              9 Mar 1847.

I believe that this entry from the 1850 census is Lucy's family. The entry is from
Washington Twp, Richland County, Ohio (p. 221).

Mark Finicum is 49 in age, male, born in Pa.
Phebe is 45 in age, female, born in Va.
Lucinda is 17 in age, female, born in Ohio.
Mary is 14, female, born in Ohio.
Jason is 9, male, born in Ohio.
Francis A. is 4, sex is unclear, born in Ohio.
Martha is 3, female, born in Ohio.
Elizabeth Barnes is 30, female, born in Ohio, married within the census year.
Jaywellan is 3/12 year old, male, born in Ohio.

The Family Group Record-680 does not say when or where Lucinda Finnicum died.

Lucy Finicum Barnes Ewbank died 25 Oct 1894 at the age of 61. This date is recorded in
her pension papers; no location is given.

The Family Group Record-680 does not say who were the parents of Lucinda Finnicum.

Both the Shriver genealogy above and the 1850 census of Mark Finicum’s household
appear to indicate that Lucinda Finnicum was the daughter of Mark Finicum and Phebe
Scott Finicum.

The Family Group Record-680 does not list the children of Ebenezer Barnes and Lucinda
Finnicum Barnes.

My father told me that Maud Barnes Fowler Webster and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Barnes were
the daughters of Ebenezer Barnes and Lucinda Finnicum Barnes. Both of these women
were known to him as his mother’s half sisters during the years when he was growing up.

Maud Barnes was born in February of 1859. Maud was born in Kansas, her father in Ohio
and her mother in Ohio according to the U.S. Census of 1920. She appears in the 1865
Kansas census above in the household of Lucy and E J Barnes.

Maud Barnes Fowler Webster died 26 January 1941 in Warren, PA. Her obituary is filed
in the public library in Warren, PA.

Lizzie was born about 1861. Lizzie was born in Kansas, her father in Ohio and her mother
in Ohio according to the U.S. Census of 1920. She appears in the 1865 Kansas census
above in the household of Lucy and E J Barnes. Lizzie never married.
