Louis Fischer from Bavaria to Dubuque, Iowa

I am searching for birth records or birthplace for Louis Fischer, born Sept. 1837 in Bavaria. Emigrated at age 17 around 1854 and ended up in Dubuque, Iowa. He is said to have been an orphan, living with his uncle whom he did not get along with. His uncle paid for his passage to America. He served in the Civil War; married Caroline Rhomberg from Austria; had five children, and died in 1975, too young to leave many records. All records state only that he was born in Bavaria or Bayern.

It is said that he lived near the Black Forest and may have visited Heidelberg, where he heard that Dubuque was very similar.

I would love to hear any suggestions about additional research.
