Thanks for your suggestion but yes, I do have a copy of their civil marriage record. Louis was a protestant and Caroline was Catholic so they did not get married in a religious ceremony. I have also tried to find a record that he became a member of the Lutheran church in Dubuque when he arrived in 1854, but apparently they do not have his name on an early list because I have not heard from them. He was only 17 when he arrived. I know his birth date so I think I may have to search 1837 Bavarian church and civil records, one by one.
