Fishers, Pa., Dutch Loan Story
Hi,
I'm fascinated to have come across a discussion in this forum of the Fisher "deer" story, which I heard from my grandfather, and would like to offer a snippet of another story.
My grandpa was Boyd Fisher Mertz, of Northumberland, Pennsylvania. His mother was Emeline Moyer Mertz. Her mother was Eliza Fisher. Her father was John Michael Fisher. His father was John Jacob Fisher (m. Mary Elizabeth Frederick). And his father was John Sebastian Fisher.
That said, my grandpa told me that the Fisher family in Germany had lent money to the Dutch to build their system of canals. The family was never repaid. Sometime late in the 19th century, I believe, members of the Fisher family in Pennsylvania sought legal intervention to be repaid. I could swear that I had a copy of a newspaper clipping (possibly from Northumberland) detailing their suit, but I can't find it presently.
Does anyone else know about this?
